Robert Kegan is the William and Miriam Meehan Professor of Adult Learning and Professional Development at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and author of The Evolving Self and In Over Our Heads.

A Psychological Perspective to Leadership Challenges

Immunity to Change is not so much a book about resisting change as it is a book of one's identity. The authors' claim is that the reason we are resistant to change is because change challenges one's current identity and that going through an identity crisis part of growing in leadership. The evidence backing this theory is sound and comes from 20+ years of study. The thesis statement supports this summary of the book, "The problem is the inability to close the gap between what we genuinely, even passionately, want and what we are actually able to do. Closing this gap is a central learning problem of the twenty-first century." The problem is not a lack of willingness, but a lack of awareness and methodology to overcoming this immunity to change.

The writing style starts off, in the first chapter, as very much a journal article type format with numbers and charts and academic language throughout. As the book progresses, the narratives become more frequent and with individual case studies rather than overarching generalizations. The author does well in sharing only what is relevant to the text with his narrations and saving the rest of the story for the appropriate context later in the book. It reads much like Influencer or Crucial Conversations in that regard. I, personally, felt that the stories just may have been a bit too long at some points with the subject matter being too little.

In sharing the real-life case studies, the authors well present their thesis to identifying and overcoming adaptive (see adaptive vs. technical) challenges. By presenting these case studies, the authors demonstrate that these are not just theories but are very real and very valid methods to creating change not just in one's own identity, but entire corporations as well. These case studies range from the common man to the corporate executive and her peer group. Furthermore, the facts and statistics that are associated to these leadership challenges are well documented and displayed throughout the book.

In conclusion, a person or organization that needs help tackling challenges that have been frustratingly unsuccessful should check this book out. It goes beyond just telling a person to act this way and actually helps one to readjust his or her identity. Also, the knowledge in this book will aid in recognizing what challenges are technical and what challenges are adaptive​, and how to appropriate the solutions.

A must for executive coaches and development professionals

This is one of the most useful, applicable books for helping people change behavior. When someone has the skill, opportunity and motivation to change but continues to revert their behavior, what can you do? The genius of this work is its simplicity. While it is based on adult developmental theory, Immunity to Change leaves the theory inside a black box. The approach is so simple and yet incredibly powerful. Four questions:

- what do you want to do?
- what are you doing instead?
- what are you afraid of?
- what is your big assumption?

The approach can be applied individually or with groups. Kegan and Lahey also offer training for facilitators and coaches wishing to learn more about I2C at a deeper level.

"We have met the enemy and he is us."

Not simply a book about organizational transformation, Immunity to Change is a challenging analysis of how our well-developed methods of processing information and experience become barriers that hinder our attempts to achieve adaptive change. The first section of the book describes the theory and can be pretty tough going. The second applies the theory to case studies of organization change. The last is a primer on how to detect and overcome change immunity in your own organization.

At the risk of being overly reductive, I will try to summarize the theory.
People deal with fear and anxiety as a normal part of life. They don't feel this fear most of the time because they have created effective internal anxiety management systems. Those frameworks for evaluating experience are beneficial and necessary but can also form a hidden barrier to the desire to achieve adaptive change. The development of a more complex mental framework (the "self-transforming mind") help the individual recognize the filtering effect and limitations of his/her own frame of reference. This recognition will allow the individual to begin to negate the effects of an internally imposed change immunity.

Looked at this way, any change which is adaptive rather than technical will, as a matter of course, put at risk "a way of knowing the world that also serves as a way of managing a persistent, fundemental anxiety." The authors argue that we can only succeed with adaptive changes by recognizing the seriousness of the internal challenge we face. The desired change can put at risk "what has been a very well-functioning way of taking care of ourselves."

This all begins to explain why diets fail, smokers continue their habit in the face of a life threatening diagnosis or a manager does not increase flexibility even if his/her job depends on so doing.

If the authors are wrong, reading this book may add unnecessary complexity to our efforts to affect the change process. If they are correct, however, they are providing the beginnings of a critical understanding of the barriers to fundemental change as well as a methodology both to detect and resolve the problem.

Many business books present somewhat simplistic reformulations of problems with which managers have long wrestled. This book, on the other hand, offers a complex psychological and epistemological methodology to detect the seemingly insurmountable barrier to individual and organizational change. I found the arguments insightful and compelling but think it unlikely I could apply the approach suggested in section 3 without the assistance of a professional coach. Given that caveat, if the outputs can be as significant as the authors suggest, it would be worth the cost and the effort.

Your Wish Has Been Granted

The long wait is over, Dragon Ball Super's manga is here and boy does it cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. It manages to cover Battle of God's, briefly go over the resurrection of Freeza and even start the tournament between universe 6 and 7. But despite covering that much the pacing doesn't feel super rushed.

Though the manga wasn't drawn by Toriyama, Toyotaro the new artist does a great job of giving the series the classic Dragon Ball look and feel. It's also fun that manga manages to add additional details to the anime's events. In short this is a must read for fans of Dragon Ball.

For those unfamiliar with the Dragon Ball series, Super might not be the best starting point as it expects you to be familiar with Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Also a note for anime only watchers of the series you will notice that some names of characters are different, so that might take a little getting use to.

The start of a new generation

Well I'm only 20 years old but I've been getting more and more into manga (Naruto, DBZ, One Piece etc.) and I can say that this is my first "next gen" manga. As in I will be following it from day 1. Much like Boruto. And my oh my is this the start of something big. I think that this is a great start for a new manga and it can only go up from here. The anime kinda ruins the thrill of what comes next but it's nice to see both running along each other. I hope others will read this and give it a try. As a new fan of Dragon Ball or someone returning who has been there since day 1 I guarantee you'll love this

When I bought this I truly didn't know what to expect. After checking at those unnoficial stories not "recognized " by the original Sensei Tory I thought this might be just another one. But it was not like that. It's shockingly brilliant. I have always been a fan of the art of Dragon Ball and the way Toru does it is absolutely fantastic. The plot its allToriyama style so it has all the energy and fun the franchise has always been. If you love Dragon Ball get this, if you love the fantastic Toriyama artwork get this, if you love frantic scenes of action rendered in the most clear and perfect way get this. In a nutshell if you want more of Dragon Ball and you got tired of all the low quality knock offs this is your deal. Around the turn of the century, now 15 years ago, �the recognition in �a variety of fields of study of the utility of the theory of cyclostationary processes began growing at an accelerating pace. �A comprehensive literature survey was �published in 2006 (see Tutorial Publications herein), and a�major extension and generalization of the theory that accommodates the effects of rapid motion between radio-frequency transmitters and receivers appeared in the 2012 book�Generalizations of cyclostationary signal processing: spectral analysis and applications� [ISBN: 978-1-119-97335-5] (written by a close friend and colleague, Professor Antonio Napolitano). Numerous research publications in the professional �journals of various fields of science and engineering have appeared during this recent period.� � �The overview paper by W. A. Gardner, A. Napolitano, and L. Paura, "Cyclostationarity: Half a Century of Research,"�Signal Processing, April 2006, received from the Publisher (Elsevier) the "Most Cited Paper Award" in 2008; and, each year since its first appearance online up through 2011, it was the most cited paper among those published in�Signal Processing�in the previous five years, and among the top 10 most downloaded papers from�Signal Processing. About the Author
Dr. Neil T. Anderson is founder and president emeritus of Freedom in Christ Ministries. He has 20 years of pastoral and teaching experience and was formerly Chairman of the Practical Theology Department at Talbot School of Theology. Neil has authored over twenty best-selling books on Christ-centered living including Victory Over the Darkness, The Bondage Breaker and Finding Hope Again. Michael Jacobson, D.O. is a board-certified osteopathic family physician who also holds an undergraduate degree in biblical studies. Following service in the military as a flight surgeon, Dr. Jacobson entered private practice and soon recognized the growing void of Church influence in health care. In 1995, he accepted a call to serve as an assistant pastor and founded Provident Medical Institute, an educational ministry dedicated to assisting Church leadership in effectively addressing health-care issues. Dr. Jacobson is author of The Word on Health, and lives with his wife, Susan, and their two sons in Ohio.

Excellent Resource

I was looking for Scriptural guidelines to help my family in choosing and using alternative medicines. I was especially concerned of the spiritual implications from using various alternative treatments, such as magnetic healing, reiki, accupuncture and applied kinesiology. (Spiritual implications came to be a concern after a number of disturbing personal experiences and reading several books - including "The Bondage Breaker" also by Anderson.) The Biblical Guide gave me the answers I was looking for and much more! It is well written, well-researched well-documented. It presents a 5 sided grid thru which an individual can investigate any medical treatment or therapy. I especially appreciate the fact that science is only one of the 5 and not the focal point. As Anderson and Jacobson point out - Science is not always right, Science is growing in it's understanding, and Science cannot become our 'god'. I also appreciate that while the author gave their concerns, they ultimately leave the decision to the reader saying that while a treatment is appropriate for one person, it might not be for the next person. Another thing I found suprising and refreshing was their inclusion of allopathic medicine. While they tend to say allopathy is one of the better options available, they gave several criticisms and warnings for using allopathy. Greatly appreciated from my perspective!

I also bought Alternative Medicine by Walt Larimore M.D., Donal O'Mathuna at the same time as The Biblical Guide. I will be returning Alternative Medicine after a quick overview told me it was rather biased towards Allopathy and science and did not contain the answers I was looking for!

The Biblical Guide was excellent! I highly recommend it and have already shared it with several friends and my Chiropractor who is also Christian!

About the Author
Michael Rees gained a BA with First Class Honours and a Doctorate in Mathematics from Oxford University in 1985 and 1988 respectively. In 1992 he gained an MBA with Distinction from INSEAD, and in 2003 graduated in first position on the Certificate in Quantitative Finance program, also winning the Wilmott award.
Since 2002 Michael has worked independently as a consultant and trainer in financial modelling. Prior to this he worked as a strategy consultant with Braxton Associates and Mercer Management Consulting, and also as an analyst at J.P. Morgan.
Michael lives in Richmond, UK. He was born in Canada, has lived in several countries, and is fluent in French and German.

How to Rev Up Your Financial Modeling Skills Set

Michael Rees succeeds to a large extent in his endeavor of writing a text that addresses the financial modeling process instead of Excel functionality, financial theory, or mathematical models. To his credit, Rees has put together a large number of useful modeling examples in the CD-ROM that is sold with the text. Rees' book assumes that readers have at least an intermediate knowledge of both statistical and financial concepts.

After reviewing select Excel functions and tools relevant to financial modeling, Rees gives his audience of modelers many practical tips about how to design, structure, and build models that are relevant, accurate, and easily understandable. Whoever has experience with models will probably agree with Rees when he writes that the majority of models built are in practice of mediocre quality. Someone other than the author of the model will often experience several challenges in dealing with the model at hand, i.e., too much time spent on understanding the model, complexity of the auditing and validating processes, hard to share with others, over-reliance on the original modeler to maintain or use it, lack of clarity of objectives, and presence of errors and implicit assumptions.

Rees then goes into the modeling of financial statements that is often required in the world of corporate finance for forecasting profit and cash, assessing financing requirements, analyzing credit risk and valuation, etc. This chapter is a little gem. It contains many practical tips. Once again, readers will be reminded that there is not always 100% agreement on the definition of some financial concepts.

Rees then uses Palisade Corporation's add-ins @RISK and PrecisionTree for many modeling examples in the two chapters that he dedicates to risk modeling and real option modeling, respectively. Having some understanding of both statistical and financial concepts is particularly important here to benefit from reading both chapters. Probably, many readers with an advanced knowledge of Excel 2007 will regret that the above-mentioned functionality that Palisade Corporation offers has not yet been systematically integrated into at least Microsoft Office Professional.

Finally, Rees discusses the use of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in a range of practical financial modeling situations. Rees points out that many otherwise competent modelers never learn VBA. For this reason, Rees makes the assumption that his audience is not very familiar with VBA. Rees shows how macros, i.e., subroutines and user-defined functions, can be used in a variety of modeling contexts.

In conclusion, Rees has made a valuable contribution to the field of financial modeling. The CD-ROM that is sold with the text plays a key role in achieving this objective.

If You're An ASA-BV, CBA, or ABV, Buy This Book!

Despite using Excel for over 20 years - which included building complex valuation models for private equity and intangible asset valuations - I had a suspicion that I was not utilizing the program to its fullest extent.

Mike Rees - who has an impressive list of credentials, including winning the coveted Wilmott Prize awarded to the top graduate in the CQF program - has written a great book that addressed my concerns by going in-depth into the advanced functionality of Excel. For example, I knew very little of the advanced look-up functions, but after plowing through Chapter 1, I now feel relatively fluent in them and realize that I could have saved immense time when calculating federal and state income taxes on projected cash flow streams or in calculating future depreciation across multiple asset classes.

Although very familiar with cash flow modelling, Chapter 3 provided a new take on that topic and gave me some insights I hadn't thought of.

Chapters 4 & 5 were also very helpful in providing exposure to Palisade Corporation's @Risk and @Tree software. As another reviewer noted, a background in probability will make the examples easier to understand, but one can still benefit from a careful reading of the chapters. (As an aside, the Palisade software is easy to download in a trial version, and the sales/support team did a great job following up.) Chapter 6 provides a basic but solid foundation in VBA using the familiar Black-Scholes model. Using this book enabled me to tackle the Staunton/Jackson book on advanced Excel-VBA modeling, which dives much more heavily into VBA programming. In my practice, I have found the combination of this book and the Staunton/Jackson book to be more useful and relevant than the Beninga text, perhaps because of their practitioner orientation.

Thanks to Mike for his hard work in producing such a useful, thought-provoking tome. Anyone in the valuation practitioner space (i.e., the ASA-BV,CBA,ABV crowd) should carefully read this book and integrate its learnings into their own practice.

Clear, specific, infinitely useful

I earned an MBA from a top tier school AND a CFA charter, neither of which taught me the essential skills of creating financial models the way they are done in real practice, with Excel. Michael Rees' text taught me the essentials and gave me the confidence to tackle any finance task.
