About the Author
Michel Poulin has gained his knowledge in the CBC Engineering laboratories, working for 14 years as a Technology Evaluation Engineer, then as a Supervising Engineer in charge of the Technology Evaluation Group. He is now with Leitch Technology International, in charge of the R & D laboratories and the Standards Compliance Group. He is an active participant in the SMPTE and IEEE standardization committee activities. He is a Fellow of the SMPTE. He is also co-author of the first edition of Digital Television Fundamentals, and lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Nice job

This book is very good. Its four parts are very easy to search: analog audio, digital audio, analog video and digital video. They cover all of the existing aspects. As a university teacher, I use it for my course on Television Systems, but I think it is useful for an audio course, or a comprehensive audio and video course. I still think that books like these should have a spanish translation, for my students who do not read english.

The name is a little misleading - the book is really about television, and digital video (JPEG,MJEPEG, MPEG-1,MPEG-2 etc.) and digital audio and computer aspects of such. Detailed descriptions of algorithms, methods of coding/decoding. Highly recommended to everybody who deals with digital video production, digital video equipment design or just wants to know exactly how it works.

This is a Hybrid book - gives too much information to be a intructory book, but not enough information to be able to implement anything. the book covers a lot of grounds, from detialed description on analog television to general details on mpeg and more, and short intruductory to a lot of topics, like firewire, scsi, ethernet, pci , etc...

I've read the complete collection in the french translation.
Among other searches on the subject i found D.T.Suzuki who writes the real thing just quietly in a serious and serene way, no explanations no propaganda .
It helped me deffinetly entering through Zen into Awereness simply feeling one together.
The way is not fast it takes the time it takes .

I bought the Pagan tarot kit and was so happy with my purchase. I could totally relate to the pictures in the deck - it is a journey of a modern day pagan woman...the pictures and the illustrations are quite everyday images of what one goes through in one's life as a believer in Nature Magic. It is a deck that every reader of today must have!

However, a few cards left me stunned - like the Chariot, the seven of swords and the ten of swords - the meanings are quite contrary to what one sees in other decks. But I suppose in this deck, this was how the journey was meant to be!

A deck for all modern day tarot readers who go through the various seasons of modern day living and working and relating...See it to believe it!

A deck for modern times

This is a tarot pack that seems clearly designed for a study of modern life. The entire point is that this is a Wiccan who is trying to balance her faith with modern life. I enjoy using this deck, though there are some cards that seem a bit, well, unusual for their meaning. However, this deck has some brilliant moments, such as the Salem witch trials as a backdrop for the Judgment card. Those looking for a pagan good time aren't likely to be happy here. This deck seems to be about the spiritual reflections of a Wiccan lady. Most of the questionable cards actually make sense if you really think about them. The drawing on the Lovers, for one, reminds us that the true meaning of the card is about choices, not romance. The Empress is actually the Goddess card, and stands to represent Her. So it really isn't improper to have a mother, a little girl who will be a maiden, and a crone, as aspects of the Goddess in her whole self.

A couple of the cards, however, such as the Tower and the Devil, are harder to understand.

My only real problem with this deck is that I have trouble interpreting the court royals and tend to mix them up. Much of the reason of this is that I just cannot find my booklet anywhere.

About the Author

X. J. Kennedy , after graduation from Seton Hall and Columbia, became a journalist second class in the Navy (“Actually, I was pretty eighth class”). His poems, some published in the New Yorker, were first collected in Nude Descending a Staircase (1961). Since then he has written six more collections, several widely adopted literature and writing textbooks, and seventeen books for children, including two novels. He has taught at Michigan, North Carolina (Greensboro), California (Irvine), Wellesley, Tufts, and Leeds. Cited in Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations and reprinted in some 200 anthologies, his verse has brought him a Guggenheim fellowship, a Lamont Award, a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, an award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, an Aiken-Taylor prize, the Robert Frost Medal of the Poetry Society of America, and the Award for Poetry for Children from the National Council of Teachers of English. He now lives in Lexington, Massachusetts, where he and his wife Dorothy have collaborated on four books and five children.

Dana Gioia is a poet, critic, and teacher.� Born in Los Angeles of Italian and Mexican ancestry, he attended Stanford and Harvard before taking a detour into business. After years of writing and reading late in the evenings after work, he quit a corporate vice presidency to write. He has published four collections of poetry, Daily Horoscope (1986), The Gods of Winter (1991), Interrogations at Noon (2001), which won the American Book Award, and Pity the Beautiful (2012); and three critical volumes, including Can Poetry Matter? (1992), an influential study of poetry’s place in contemporary America. Gioia has taught at Johns Hopkins, Sarah Lawrence, Wesleyan (Connecticut), Mercer, and Colorado College. From 2003-2009 he served as the Chairman of the National Endowments for the Arts. At the NEA he created the largest literary programs in federal history, including Shakespeare in American Communities and Poetry Out Loud, the national high school poetry recitation contest. He also led the campaign to restore active literary reading by creating The Big Read, which helped reverse a quarter century of decline in U.S. reading. He is currently the Judge Widney Professor of Poetry and Public Culture at the University of Southern California.

Surprsingly Wonderful!

I picked this book up for a class, expecting to be perfectly bored. Instead, this book woke up my sleeping love of learning and literature. The book is easy to understand and contains MANY great stories and poems in it. It also has a great glossary and index was well. It came with an additional feature, MyLiteratureLab, which is an accompanying web page. That is also very helpful indeed.
This book is so good, there were even people at work wanting to check it out!

A very good and thorough textbook.

This textbook gives deep coverage to the areas of short fiction, drama, and poetry. It contains an astounding amount of information. There are quite a number of full stories, poems, and plays--although I have not counted, I would say that the number could be approaching 1000.

The authors have done a great job in selecting writings to illustrate concepts. All of the selected writings are good, in the objective sense--they contain deep meaning. Of course, personal taste is subjective, and my experience was that some of the writings were thoroughly enjoyable, and none were quite intolerable.

There are also questions after pieces of literature to help the reader achieve more insight than they might of their own devices, small sections that offer tips on writing, light biographies and case studies of various authors. Throughout the course I have made lists of various authors I found to be particularly interesting, for further reading on my own time.

This singular textbook was, for the purpose of my class, equivalent to a boxed set which contains each of the treated topics in a separate book. The page numbers corresponded exactly to those of the books in the boxed set. I saved a good bit of money in purchasing this, and I much prefer a single textbook to a clumsy boxed set.

I like this textbook enough that now that my class is done, I am still considering whether to keep it for independent learning or sell it to recoup some of the cost.

Thin Pages

I bought this for my Introduction to Literature class, and I must say I did appreciate the book being broken down into four smaller books. I cannot imagine trying to handle the text if it had been all in one book. However, the thin pages are a huge downfall, as it makes them very easy to tear and almost impossible to highlight. The highlighting just bleeds right through the page. It's also hard to write with anything but pencil in the books for the same reason. I suspect some of you will cringe when thinking of highlighting or writing in your text, but it was required by my instructor and I personally find it helpful. I would say the pages are about the same thickness as what is in a typical Bible.

The literature in this collection is typical for an introductory class. I found most of it enjoyable and there was a nice variety. I would recommend being very careful if you are planning to sell this book back at the end of the semester as it's easy to damage.

Not worth any price.

I'm sorry but this was just beyond frustrating. You invest in 4 books in a series over months if not years of publication dates and this is the ending that we get. This isn't "artsy" or whatever the author was going for, it was annoying and a waste of time.

Mild spoilers ahead:

If we wanted to see the story come full circle with the world ending up in actually a worse position than before we could have skipped 3.75 books and just said "hey, nothing you read actually matters".

A Book without and ending

I see the drive in the modern writer to write a story that is different. A story with something to make it stand out. But this... this is just a story without an end. Don't waste your time reading this well written, well imagined story because it's biggest failing is its ending and you will be as angry as I was. Drivel.

The ending negated a great series

I loved this series up until the last 50 pages. It wasn't just the plot twist, but the manner in which the twist turn key elements of the series into a gimmick. There was also a lack of resolution. Good over evil or not - it was disappointing not to have some epilogue to help us understand how the decision turns out.

Out of Date

I was hoping for more, but it does offer some helpful advice. The book's a bit out of date -- some of the examples are way out of date - from technology to marketing to today's audience. Very little value. Ironically the author encourage you to keep current. The biggest disappointment is that the author brags non-stop.

Best resource available for professional speakers

I'm not going to re-hash the contents of the book. You can look at other reviews for that info. Instead, I want to describe the RESULTS that this book helped create for me and my clients that I've recommended to read it:

1. Successfully increased my speaking fees by over 30%: If you feel like you're not making enough money as a speaker, or you struggle when negotiating your fees, Alan Weiss will give you the techniques and mindset necessary to overcome that problem. I'm earning more speaking income now than before I read this book, and so are my clients.

2. Landing speaking engagements more frequently: Alan will teach you how to get leaders to seek you out for speaking events. Don't waste your time chasing down leaders. If you know how to provide real value in your presentations, you can make them pursue you, which makes the negotiation, planning, and event process much more enjoyable.

Four Words: Don't Waste Your Money

Just finished this book on my flight.

Total waste of money.

The author is out of touch and completely irrelevant to what's working in 2010. All he wants to do is talk to you about his "nice cars and houses" in an attempt to communicate his "authority". These concepts are out of date and based on speculation and catchy subtitles not what is truly working in the market place. I would suggest either "The Brand Called You" or "You've Got to Be Believed to Be Heard"

This is an excellent textbook, which I use for teaching an MRI class at UC Berkeley.
It is clear, simple and reads very smoothly. Chapters 1-7 are complete, but the rest are draft chapters.

I strongly recommend student to buy directly from Lulu.com, since all the sellers here are overpricing this book.
