From Neuron to Brain: A Cellular and Molecular Approach to the Function of the Nervous System, Fourth Edition, by John G. Nicholls, A. Rob

In the 25 years since From Neuron to Brain was first published, the authors' aim has remained constant—to describe how nerve cells go about their business of transmitting signals, how the signals are put together, and how, out of this integration, higher functions emerge. The new Fourth Edition, while maintaining this focus, has been completely reformatted and updated.

The emphasis, as before, is on experiments, and on the way they are carried out. Using a narrative approach, the authors follow a line from the original inception of a new idea to an account of research being done today. The wealth of new facts, techniques, and concepts, however, presented a challenge in keeping the book to a manageable size. Inevitably, the authors have had to delete descriptions of certain classical experiments.

Largely in response to readers' comments, elements of format and presentation have been changed for this new edition—more headings have been introduced, the paragraphs are shorter, and the illustrations, now in full color, have been clarified. As in previous editions, references are cited throughout the text, and appendices are provided to help readers unfamiliar with the nervous system deal with essential facts and definitions.

Intended for use in upper-level undergraduate, graduate, psychology, and medical school Neuroscience courses, From Neuron to Brain will be of interest to anyone, with or without a specialized background in biological sciences, who is curious about the workings of the nervous system. It presents a readable and coherent account of how cellular and molecular approaches can provide insights into the workings of the brain.

Clear, concise, helpful text for a beginning grad student!
By R. Vest
I am a first year graduate student "accidentally" entering the field of neuroscience. I needed a basic text to help me "catch up". This book has been wonderful! The authors' have a great writing style- easy to read. More importantly, the authors are expert at choosing and presenting important, basic aspects of neurobiology to inexperienced neuroscientists without bogging the reader down with unnecessary and confusing detail. In particular, the authors thoroughly discuss ion channels and their role in neuronal communication, presenting electrophysiology as a valuable tool for studying these channels. This text was "just right" for me. However, if you are an advanced "neuroscientist", this text might be a bit on the "simple" side.

A great introductory book on neuroscience
By Ann Lee
I am a physics graduate student who happen to become interested in neuroscience. I had been searching for an introductory book when I stumbled upon this one. Although I am only half-way through the book right now, I could already tell that it is exactly what a newcomer to this field would need. With the terminology clearly defined, the book gives a very concise, clear, and logic description on the fundamentals. It further keeps one's interest high by relating the fundamental knowledges to everyday experiences. What I like most about this book is that it does not shy away from pointing out what is not yet known. With the last chapter devoted to "open questions", it presents the real questions to be answered. This book is really perfect. Highly recommended.

Wish I had learned about this book before
By Virginia Medinilla
I'm a 3rd year graduate student in neuroscience, currently studying synaptic transmission with an electrophysiological approach. With biotechnology as an undergrad, let's just say my neurophysiology background was far from being strong. My PI recommended me this book a couple of weeks ago and I'm just loving it. The part on synaptic transmission (chapters 9 to 11) is simply great. I find things that I've read about MANY times before, on books like Kandel's, Fundamental Neuroscience, and many of the classic big textbooks, but none of them deals with this part as this one does. It's kind of the same issues but with a slightly different perspective, a perspective that I think you're able to appreciate more as you gain some experience in the field. Little details, certain experiments that you might have overlooked as a first year student, suddenly make all the sense. I don't think this is an overly simple book. It is really well written, and that's what I think makes it kind of reader-friendly but again, somehow it gets to deal with classical issues and concepts in a much deeper and USEFUL way (particularly for people actually working on this) than the great majority of other textbooks in this area. As I said in the title of my review, I wish I had learned about this book before, and that's the reason I'm writing this. Hope it helps :)

Aimed primarily at intermediate and advanced coaches, this book examines the principle formations used in modern soccer and the need to fully understand them all if one is to adapt to game situations using counter-active tactics. The authors discuss such offensive topics as support, width, penetration, mobility and improvisation. Defensively, they provide insight into depth, delay, concentration, team balance, cover and restraint. Chapters include: Three Man Defense, Four Man Defense, One Forward System, Two Forward System and Three Forward System. Well organized and clearly written.

Formation Strategies
By Scott Griswold
As stated on the back cover, this book is "aimed primarily at intermediate and advanced coaches" and "examines the principle formations used in modern soccer..." It states these formations clearly (along with diagrams) and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each. It is a great resource for the coach who is looking to develop the appropriate offensive and defensive systems. The book does not cover other issues such as team management or practice drills. Look elsewhere for that.

Holistic overview of the basics
By D. Masson
Great book for covering all the major issues of attacking and defending. If you want to know where your defenders or forwards should position to maximize their position, this is a great book. There are many simple basic diagrams that are uncluttered, showing just the players involved in the play and this is a plus for sharing information with your players!

The book does not cover any drills for achieving these desired results, but I consider it a must read for the coach considering the 4-4-2, 4-3-3, or 3-5-2 formations.

Buy with confidence, this book will refresh your positioning and playing coaching skills as well as providing a way to copy handouts for your players from the many diagrams this book provides!

Best intermediate level Soccer Strategy book so far
By TechGuru101
I'm been playing and coaching soccer for about 4 years now and my son is now playing U12 competitive soccer. I was suprised that many people said they "knew" about soccer, but when I tried to get any strategies from them, they really didn't know. When I started assisting as a coach, often the coach woukd send the kids out on to the field with confusing orders and no real strategy (and later yell at them for not following his orders...poor kids). Anyways, When I started looking for a clear book on strategy, it was not easy, my first book "Fundamental Soccer Tactics" by Dewazien, was a great beginners book, but this book is the next step up.

Overall this book has given me much more insight as to the rationale, pros and cons of different formations/line-ups, and some great offensive and defensive strategies. I gave it 4 stars because I think it could have been illustrated better, and also written in a clearer fashion, but if you read it patiently, the information is there. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants to take their knowledge of soccer to the next level.

Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies: Migrant Farmworkers in the United States (California Series in Public Anthropology), by Seth Holmes

Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies provides an intimate examination of the everyday lives and suffering of Mexican migrants in our contemporary food system. An anthropologist and MD in the mold of Paul Farmer and Didier Fassin, Holmes shows how market forces, anti-immigrant sentiment, and racism undermine health and health care. Holmes’s material is visceral and powerful. He trekked with his companions illegally through the desert into Arizona and was jailed with them before they were deported. He lived with indigenous families in the mountains of Oaxaca and in farm labor camps in the U.S., planted and harvested corn, picked strawberries, and accompanied sick workers to clinics and hospitals. This “embodied anthropology” deepens our theoretical understanding of the ways in which social inequalities and suffering come to be perceived as normal and natural in society and in health care.

All of the book award money and royalties from the sales of this book have been donated to farm worker unions, farm worker organizations and farm worker projects in consultation with farm workers who appear in the book.

From the Inside Flap
"In Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies, Seth Holmes offers up an important and captivating new ethnography, linking the structural violence inherent in the migrant labor system in the United States to the social processes by which it becomes normalized. Drawing on five years of fieldwork among the Triqui people from Oaxaca, Mexico, Holmes investigates local understandings of suffering and illness, casting into relief stereotypes and prejudices that he ties to the transnational labor that puts cheap food on American tables. Throughout this compelling volume, Holmes considers ways of engaging migrant farm workers and allies that might help disrupt exploitation that reaches across national boundaries and can too often be hidden away. This book is a gripping read not only for cultural and medical anthropologists, immigration and ethnic studies students, students of labor and agriculture, physicians and public health professionals, but also anyone interested in the lives and well-being of the people providing them cheap, fresh fruit."—Paul Farmer, Co-founder of Partners In Health and Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

“Dramatically portrays the harsh physical and emotional conditions under which farm workers labor. As they complete their brutal work, they suffer long-term disabilities in their senior years. This can be avoided with reasonable and decent working conditions. Let us remember them as we eat our daily meals.”—Dolores Huerta

"This book takes concepts from the world of scholarship to enrich the understanding of people's lives; and the vivid detail, and empathetic portrait of the reality of people's lives enrich scholarship. The book leaves the reader in no doubt that economic arrangements, social hierarchies, discrimination, poor living and working conditions have profound effects on the health of marginalized people. It is all done with the touch of a gifted writer. The reader lives the detail and is much moved."—Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Director, UCL Institute of Health Equity

"Provides a unique understanding of the political economy of migrant labor and of its human cost."—Didier Fassin is Professor of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, and the author of Humanitarian Reason.

"Here in the U.S., we both utterly rely on immigrants from the South to feed us, and erect walls and employ militias to keep them out. In this groundbreaking new book, Holmes goes underground to explore what this bizarre duality means for the people who live it. A brilliant combination of academic rigor and journalistic daring."—Tom Philpott, Food and Agriculture Correspondent, Mother Jones Magazine

“Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies is a powerful exposé of the social and political realities that mark the bodies and limit the life prospects of Mexican migrant farmworkers in the world’s richest economy. An absorbing read and a resolute call for just labor relations and health equity as key to a common and sustainable human development.”— João Biehl, author of Vita: Life in a Zone of Social Abandonment

“Holmes' book is a lyrical ethnographic rendition of Robert Chailloux's "Still Life with Strawberries," revealing the back stage, back-breaking work of indigenous Mexican pickers trapped in patron-client relationship to Japanese-American farm owners who are themselves trapped in price wars with global competitors to produce the beautiful abundance that we take for granted."—Nancy Scheper-Hughes, author of Death without Weeping

“A tour du force ethnography. Holmes gives us the rare combination of medical, anthropological, and humanitarian gazes into the lives of Oaxacan migrant farmworkers in the United States. Their agricultural field work and his anthropological fieldwork intersect to produce a book full of insights into the pathos, inequalities, frustrations, and dreams punctuating the farmworkers’ daily lives. Through Holmes' vivid prose, and the words of the workers themselves, we feel with the workers as they strain their bodies picking fruit and pruning vines, we sense their fear as they cross the U.S.-Mexico border, we understand their frustrations as they are chased and detained by immigration authorities, and cheer at their perseverance when faced with bureaucrats and medical personnel who treat them as if they are to blame for their own impoverished condition. A must read for anyone interested in the often invisible lives and suffering of those whose labor provides for our very sustenance.”—Leo R. Chavez, Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Irvine

“In his first book, anthropologist and doctor Seth M. Holmes gives us an intimate look into the lives of migrant farmworkers. Through his exhaustive research, Holmes reveals the struggles of the millions who work in our fields, every year, to put food on our tables. In deliberations about immigration and farm policy, these are the stories that should be at the center. Holmes' helps us put them there.”

Anna Lappé, author Diet for a Hot Planet and founder, Real Food Media Project

“Like the reporting of Edward R. Murrow and the labors of Cesar Chavez, Seth Holmes’ work on these modern-day migrants reminds us of the human beings who produce the greatest bounty of food the world has ever seen. They take jobs other American workers won’t take for pay other American workers won’t accept and under conditions other American workers won’t tolerate. Yet except for the minority of farm workers protected by United Farm Workers’ contracts, these workers too often don’t earn enough to adequately feed themselves. Seth Holmes’ writing fuels the UFW’s ongoing organizing among farm workers and admonishes the American people that our work remains unfinished.”—Arturo S. Rodriguez, President, United Farm Workers of America

The greatest ethnography I have ever read.
By Frank Elavsky
This review is one that I wrote for my anthropology class, but I thought it could be helpful for potential readers as well:

Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies by Seth Holmes is one of the few books that I have read that I consider so forceful, so meaningful, and so necessary to the readership of our time, that I can find few words to adequately describe both my experience reading this text and the content in its pages.

I suppose I will begin with my myself and my experience of the text, and then move in to what the text contains any why I believe it is important. If I frame my review this way, I believe the importance of this book becomes clearer.

To start, I myself am a white male born as an American citizen. Aside from those privileges, I grew up in a middle-class world in a resort town in Skagit county, on the western edge of the valley where much of the ethnographic fieldwork of Seth Holmes was located. While racial lines of oppression are clear between the reservation lands of the Native tribes, the newer, more transient forms of oppression (migrant farm work) slipped by me unnoticed.

For someone with my experience driving by these wholesome looking homesteads, gazing with pleasant admiration at the beautiful romance of the misty, rolling fields, observing the migrant workers and their skillful labor of the earth, this book has put a necessary frame onto the experience that I have of Skagit Valley. Still to this day when I drive up north to visit family back home, I always take the "scenic route." That route involves passing right through the major farmland of the valley, so the sight of seasonal, migrant labor is and has always been unavoidable to me. My own aunts and uncles own apple and cherry orchards on the East side of the mountains, and I have grown up not just observing migrant workers, but even laboring alongside them at times. The stories of the white teenage workers in Holmes' book ring true to my own account of privilege.

Beyond my work with and observation of, I have never investigated the issues of migration or racism that migrant laborers are subject to. Despite lacking larger investigation, I have never asked them their story or observed them (even in my admirations) beyond their labor. In fact, it has been my deep appreciation of production (part of my affluent, work hard and you will earn rewards ethic) that has disguised the need for their stories to be heard. I see them and how hard they work, so my normalized conclusion is that they will benefit, if not now but someday, for the sake of their efforts alone.

Because of that, reading this book has struck a chord so low and rolling in my body, that I wept for hours when I first picked it up and turned its pages. I am a student studying theology and philosophy, and I have taken a great interest in community organizing, ethics, human rights, consumerism, globalization, and other topics related and unrelated to Holmes' work. It is my experience, being stuck in books dense in theory and thought, which are full of well-performed arguments, that my edge has dulled, not sharpened. I sometimes forget what I care about, where the fight takes place, or even who is really involved, when I am so busy reading about it all in theory. While I have spent time with local activists in the Puget Sound and also activists working on a larger scale both in Chicago and Atlanta, it wasn’t until reading this book that my experience became so earthy, so grounded, that I felt I had the clarity to really understand and articulate my position. Really, this book has cultivated a new sense of meaning for my budding mission.

So, this is where my review transitions. After reading such a masterful book like this, I would recommend it to anyone. Holmes gracefully writes of both his experience and combined theories, concluding with clear, concrete, palatable actions for his readership to take. This book is neither so academic so that its scope is too small, nor so simple that it does a disservice to the reality of migrant labor in today’s complicated context. I believe that this book is relevant to a broad readership that could range from anyone committed to an investigative approach on the issues of migration and production in America today, down to anyone who purchases fruit in the market and wonders about more than its freshness and price.

Seth Holmes begins his book with an acknowledgement, which to me is perhaps the highest honor that this book ultimately accomplishes. Sure, the book is also an inspiration to readers, a nod to academics, or a source of income perhaps with adequate publication. But to me, this book accomplishes acknowledging the unacknowledged. "Most importantly, I want to thank the Triqui people... and their trust," are Seth Holmes' words in the opening paragraph of his introduction.

In the following chapters Holmes explains much of his unique approach, dancing on the line between his anthropological and medical disciplines. His approach is refreshing because it is so intentional and succinct. He guides his readers through narratively framed stories of his experience, openly engaging his own body's involvement in many encounters, interactions, and situations. His intuition and sensitivity of his surroundings, his honesty and awareness of his own perspective, creates a picture of his fieldwork that becomes the iconic example of ethnographic fieldwork, done the way it should be. I am satisfied knowing that many undergraduate anthropology classes in America have already picked up this text for its required reading.

After he has a section on his fieldwork, often framed as a story-experience, he uses theory and research to interpret what it all means. Steadily and methodically through his book, he frames the experience of his Triqui friends in terms of their motivation for migrating, their internalized sense of identity as a people, and the rich description of their life and work before during and after their time on the farms they seasonally labor for. Holmes clearly and without hesitation identifies to his readership the role of the farm and the farm's place within a global, competitive market. He honestly portrays the difficulties of a family-owned farm, seeking to treat its workers with equity while simultaneously competing against the small fruit import market from China and California. Holmes continues by naming the racist metastructure that contributes to the social position of the Triqui people, all of who are indigenous Mexicans. He engages the linguistic difficulties faced by his companions, by naming the privilege of English and Spanish over their indigenous language and dialect. He discusses everything from literally their position on the farm and at home in Mexico geographically, to literally their position in height (working on the ground) as measures of marginalization and oppression. Holmes furthers his investigation by bringing in his medical background and discipline, displaying the embodied experience of the Triqui people in transit, as deeply damaging to their livelihood and health.

By the grace of true genius, Holmes interprets and explains the massively complicated issues that arise in light of this work. He talks about the normalization, internalization, and naturalization of symbolic violence and how this relates to the structural violence that regulates the continuum of the whole picture. Holmes makes it clear to his readers, without lengthy explanation in theory, but thorough explanation by example, what violence looks like now, how it all continues to perpetuate itself, and what can be done to stop it. Holmes doesn't just talk about what "bad faith" is, or how ignorance is perpetuated, he shows his readers and then demonstrates clearly what can be done.

Holmes takes the work of many esteemed scholars, (Bourdieu, Bourgois, Geertz, Scheper-Hughes, Merleau-Ponty, Foucault, Primo Levi, Sartre, Paul Farmer, Levinas, and many many others) subjects such as structural and systemic violence, transnationalism, globalization, consumerism, economism, and phenomenology (to name a just a few), all with the politics, ethics, and economics of the holistic picture - and distills this into a package that is not only palatable and digestable to a budding or even novice reader, but manages to give incredible dignity and personhood to his subjects: the Triqui people. Holmes is uncompromising in his mission, yet wholly satisfying to both the reader with an intense theoretical background and the average produce-eating consumer who is concerned with knowing the truth of the situation. Holmes communicates to his readers what must be done: by fighting the words and language which are damaging to the personhood of the marginalized (tearing down the symbolic violence), by simply asking the oppressed themselves what they need (giving them dignity as subjects and "pragmatic solidarity"), and through medical reform (reevaluating entities and their health to include political, social, historical, and economic context - not just their bio-medical/behavioral status), change is possible.

While I really could not end this review on a note strong enough to make particular my love of this book, I know that the effect its pages have had and will have on my beliefs, actions, and relationships will ultimately communicate just how important Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies is; no ethnography has ever had such a forceful effect on my being and personhood before.

insightful and challenging analysis
By nolabookworm
Holmes' moving work reveals the "bad faith" American consumerism that criminalizes migrant laborers even as it depends on them for access to the dinner table. While his theoretical framework is at times awkward, his analysis of the social plight of his Triqui companions more than compensates for this deficiency. The larger issues of neoliberal market inequalities may at times seem a little daunting for non-academic readers, but Holmes' narrative consistently demonstrates that our demand for cheap products has devastating global consequences. Definitely worth a close read.

Amazing.
By AnthroNerd
I've not even finished reading this book yet, and I've already decided that this is one of the most important ethnographies ever written. It is theoretically rich, yet written in a way that is accessible to a broad audience. This ethnography has the potential to transform the way people think about immigration, forcing them to examine the global system that allows undocumented workers to be treated as subhuman.

The Signal and the Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail - But Some Don't, by Nate Silver

"Nate Silver's The Signal and the Noise is The Soul of a New Machine for the 21st century." —Rachel Maddow, author of Drift

Nate Silver built an innovative system for predicting baseball performance, predicted the 2008 election within a hair’s breadth, and became a national sensation as a blogger—all by the time he was thirty. He solidified his standing as the nation's foremost political forecaster with his near perfect prediction of the 2012 election. Silver is the founder and editor in chief of FiveThirtyEight.com.

Drawing on his own groundbreaking work, Silver examines the world of prediction, investigating how we can distinguish a true signal from a universe of noisy data. Most predictions fail, often at great cost to society, because most of us have a poor understanding of probability and uncertainty. Both experts and laypeople mistake more confident predictions for more accurate ones. But overconfidence is often the reason for failure. If our appreciation of uncertainty improves, our predictions can get better too. This is the “prediction paradox”: The more humility we have about our ability to make predictions, the more successful we can be in planning for the future.

In keeping with his own aim to seek truth from data, Silver visits the most successful forecasters in a range of areas, from hurricanes to baseball, from the poker table to the stock market, from Capitol Hill to the NBA. He explains and evaluates how these forecasters think and what bonds they share. What lies behind their success? Are they good—or just lucky? What patterns have they unraveled? And are their forecasts really right? He explores unanticipated commonalities and exposes unexpected juxtapositions. And sometimes, it is not so much how good a prediction is in an absolute sense that matters but how good it is relative to the competition. In other cases, prediction is still a very rudimentary—and dangerous—science.

Silver observes that the most accurate forecasters tend to have a superior command of probability, and they tend to be both humble and hardworking. They distinguish the predictable from the unpredictable, and they notice a thousand little details that lead them closer to the truth. Because of their appreciation of probability, they can distinguish the signal from the noise.

With everything from the health of the global economy to our ability to fight terrorism dependent on the quality of our predictions, Nate Silver’s insights are an essential read.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, September 2012: People love statistics. Statistics, however, do not always love them back. The Signal and the Noise, Nate Silver's brilliant and elegant tour of the modern science-slash-art of forecasting, shows what happens when Big Data meets human nature. Baseball, weather forecasting, earthquake prediction, economics, and polling: In all of these areas, Silver finds predictions gone bad thanks to biases, vested interests, and overconfidence. But he also shows where sophisticated forecasters have gotten it right (and occasionally been ignored to boot). In today's metrics-saturated world, Silver's book is a timely and readable reminder that statistics are only as good as the people who wield them. --Darryl Campbell

From Bookforum
Silver doesn't offer one comprehensive theory for what makes a good prediction in his interdisciplinary tour of forecasting. But the book is a useful gloss on the tricky business of making predictions correctly. —Chris Wilson

Review
One of Wall Street Journal's Best Ten Works of Nonfiction in 2012

“Mr. Silver, just 34, is an expert at finding signal in noise… Lively prose — from energetic to outraged… illustrates his dos and don’ts through a series of interesting essays that examine how predictions are made in fields including chess, baseball, weather forecasting, earthquake analysis and politics… [the] chapter on global warming is one of the most objective and honest analyses I’ve seen… even the noise makes for a good read.”
—New York Times

“Not so different in spirit from the way public intellectuals like John Kenneth Galbraith once shaped discussions of economic policy and public figures like Walter Cronkite helped sway opinion on the Vietnam War…could turn out to be one of the more momentous books of the decade.”
—New York Times Book Review

"A serious treatise about the craft of prediction—without academic mathematics—cheerily aimed at lay readers. Silver's coverage is polymathic, ranging from poker and earthquakes to climate change and terrorism."
—New York Review of Books

"Mr. Silver's breezy style makes even the most difficult statistical material accessible. What is more, his arguments and examples are painstakingly researched..."
—Wall Street Journal

"Nate Silver is the Kurt Cobain of statistics... His ambitious new book, The Signal and the Noise, is a practical handbook and a philosophical manifesto in one, following the theme of prediction through a series of case studies ranging from hurricane tracking to professional poker to counterterrorism. It will be a supremely valuable resource for anyone who wants to make good guesses about the future, or who wants to assess the guesses made by others. In other words, everyone."
—The Boston Globe

"Silver delivers an improbably breezy read on what is essentially a primer on making predictions."
—Washington Post

“The Signal and the Noise is many things — an introduction to the Bayesian theory of probability, a meditation on luck and character, a commentary on poker's insights into life — but it's most important function is its most basic and absolutely necessary one right now: a guide to detecting and avoiding bullshit dressed up as data…What is most refreshing… is its humility. Sometimes we have to deal with not knowing, and we need somebody to tell us that.”
—Esquire

“[An] entertaining popularization of a subject that scares many people off… Silver’s journey from consulting to baseball analytics to professional poker to political prognosticating is very much that of a restless and curious mind. And this, more than number-crunching, is where real forecasting prowess comes from.”
—Slate

“Nate Silver serves as a sort of Zen master to American election-watchers… In the spirit of Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s widely read “The Black Swan”, Mr. Silver asserts that humans are overconfident in their predictive abilities, that they struggle to think in probabilistic terms and build models that do not allow for uncertainty.”
—The Economist

"Silver explores our attempts at forecasting stocks, storms, sports, and anything else not set in stone."
—Wired

"The Signal and the Noise is essential reading in the era of Big Data that touches every business, every sports event, and every policymaker."
—Forbes.com

“Laser sharp. Surprisingly, statistics in Silver’s hands is not without some fun.”
—Smithsonian Magazine

“A substantial, wide-ranging, and potentially important gauntlet of probabilistic thinking based on actual data thrown at the feet of a culture determined to sweep away silly liberal notions like ‘facts.’”
—The Village Voice

“Silver shines a light on 600 years of human intelligence-gathering—from the advent of the printing press all the way through the Industrial Revolution and up to the current day—and he finds that it's been an inspiring climb. We've learned so much, and we still have so much left to learn.”
—MLB.com

“Nate Silver’s The Signal and the Noise is The Soul of a New Machine for the 21st century (a century we thought we’d be a lot better at predicting than we actually are). Our political discourse is already better informed and more data-driven because of Nate’s influence. But here he shows us what he has always been able to see in the numbers—the heart and the ethical imperative of getting the quantitative questions right.  A wonderful read—totally engrossing.”
—Rachel Maddow, author of Drift

“Yogi Berra was right: ‘forecasting is hard, especially about the future.’ In this important book, Nate Silver explains why the performance of experts varies from prescient to useless and why we must plan for the unexpected. Must reading for anyone who cares about what might happen next.”
—Richard Thaler, co-author of Nudge

“Making predictions in the era of ‘big data’ is not what you might imagine. Nate Silver's refreshing and original book provides unpredictably illuminating insights differentiating objective and subjective realities in forecasting our future. He reminds us that the human element is still essential in predicting advances in science, technology and even politics... if we were only wise enough to learn from our mistakes.”
—Governor Jon Huntsman

“Here's a prediction: after you read The Signal and the Noise, you'll have much more insight into why some models work well—and also why many don't.  You'll learn to pay more attention to weather forecasts for the coming week—and none at all for weather forecasts beyond that.  Nate Silver takes a complex, difficult subject and makes it fun, interesting, and relevant.”
—Peter Orszag, former director of the Office of Management and Budget

“Projection, prediction, assumption, trepidation, anticipation, expectation, estimation… we wouldn’t have 80 words like this in the English language if it wasn’t central to our lives. We tend not to take prediction seriously because, on some level, we know that we don’t know. Silver shows us how this inevitable part of life goes awry when projected on a grand scale into the murky worlds of politics, science and economics. Dancing through chess, sports, snowstorms, global warming and the McLaughlin Group, he makes a serious and systematic effort to show us how to clean the noise off the signal.”
—Bill James, author of The Bill James Baseball Abstracts

Much-needed insight to understand and improve predictive science
By Sitting in Seattle
This is the best general-readership book on applied statistics that I've read. Short review: if you're interested in science, economics, or prediction: read it. It's full of interesting cases, builds intuition, and is a readable example of Bayesian thinking.

Longer review: I'm an applied business researcher and that means my job is to deliver quality forecasts: to make them, persuade people of them, and live by the results they bring. Silver's new book offers a wealth of insight for many different audiences. It will help you to develop intuition for the kinds of predictions that are possible, that are not so possible, where they may go wrong, and how to avoid some common pitfalls.

The core concept is this: prediction is a vital part of science, of business, of politics, of pretty much everything we do. But we're not very good at it, and fall prey to cognitive biases and other systemic problems such as information overload that make things worse. However, we are simultaneously learning more about how such things occur and that knowledge can be used to make predictions better -- and to improve our models in science, politics, business, medicine, and so many other areas.

The book presents real-world experience and critical reflection on what happens to research in social contexts. Data-driven models with inadequate theory can lead to terrible inferences. For example, on p. 162: "What happens in systems with noisy data and underdeveloped theory - like earthquake prediction and parts of economic and political science - is a two-step process. First, people start to mistake the noise for a signal. Second, this noise pollutes journals, blogs, and news accounts with false alarms, undermining good science and setting back our ability to understand how the system really works." This is the kind of insight that every good practitioner acquires through hard-won battles, and continues to wrestle every day both in doing work and in communicating it to others.

It is both readable and technically accurate: it presents just enough model details yet avoids being formula-heavy. Statisticians will be able to reproduce models similar to the ones he discusses, but general readers will not be left out: the material is clear and applicable. Scholars of all stripes will appreciate the copious notes and citations, 56 pages of notes and another 20 pages of index, which detail the many sources. It is also important to note that this is perhaps the best general readership book from a Bayesian perspective -- a viewpoint that is overdue for readable exposition.

The models cover a diversity of areas from baseball to politics, from earthquakes to finance, from climate science to chess. Of course this makes the book fascinating to generalists, geeks, and breadth thinkers, but perhaps more importantly, I think it serves well to develop reusable intuition across domains. And, for those of us who practice such things professionally, to bring stories and examples that we can tell and use to illustrate concepts with the people we inform.

There are three audiences who might not appreciate the book as much. First are students looking for a how-to book. Silver provides a lot of pointers and examples, but does not get into nuts and bolts details or supply foundational technical instruction. That requires coursework in research methods and and statistics. Second, his approach to doing multiple models and interpreting them humbly will not satisfy those who promote a naive, gee-whiz, "look how great these new methods are" approach to research. But then, that's not a problem; it's a good thing. The third non-fitting audience will be experts who desire depth in one of the book's many topic areas; it's not a technical treatise for them and I can confidently predict grumbling in some quarters. Overall, those three audiences are small, which happily leaves the rest of us to enjoy the book.

What would make it better? As a pro, I'd like a little more depth (of course). It emphasizes games a little too much for my taste. And a clearer prescriptive framework could be nice (but also could be a problem for reasons he illustrates). But those are minor points; it hits its target better than any other such book I know.

Conclusion: if you're interested in scientific or statistical forecasting, either as a professional or layperson, or if you simply enjoy general science books, get it. Cheers!

Great book, and here are some takeaways
By Kindle Customer
Excellent book!!! People looking for a "how to predict" silver bullet will (like some reviewers here) be disappointed, mainly because Silver is too honest to pretend that such a thing exists. The anecdotes and exposition are fantastic, and I wish we could make this book required reading for, say, everyone in the country.

During election season, everyone with a newspaper column or TV show feels entitled to make (transparently partisan) predictions about the consequences of each candidate's election to unemployment/crime/abortion/etc. This kind of pundit chatter, as Silver notes, tends to be insanely inaccurate. But there are also some amazing success stories in the prediction business. I list some chapter-by-chapter takeaways below (though there's obviously a lot depth more to the book than I can fit into a list like this):

1. People have puzzled over prediction and uncertainty for centuries.

2. TV pundits make terrible predictions, no better than random guesses. They are rewarded for being entertaining, and not really penalized for being wrong.

3. Statistics has revolutionized baseball. But computer geeks have not replaced talent scouts altogether. They're working together in more interesting ways now.

4. Weather prediction has gotten lots better over the last fifty years, due to highly sophisticated, large-scale supercomputer modeling.

5. We have almost no ability to predict earthquakes. But we know that some regions are more earthquake prone, and that in a given region an earthquake of magnitude n happens about ten times as often as an earthquake of magnitude (n+1).

6. Economists are terrible at predicting quantities such as next year's GDP. Predictions are only very slightly correlated with reality. They also tend to be overconfident, drastically underestimating the margin of error in their guesses. Politically motivated predictions (such as those released by White House, historically) are even worse.

7. The spread of a disease like the flu is hard to predict. Sometimes we overreact because risk of under-reacting seems greater.

8. A few professional sports gamblers are able to make make a living by spotting meaningful patterns before others do, and being right slightly more than half the time.

9. Kasparov thought he could beat Deep Blue. Couldn't. Interesting tale of humans/computers trying to outguess each other.

10. Nate Silver made a living playing online poker for a few years. When the government tightened the rules, the less savvy players ("fish") stopped playing, and he found he couldn't make money any more. So he started FiveThirtyEight.

11. Efficient market hypothesis: market seems very efficient, but not perfectly so. Possible source of error: most investment is done by institutions, and individuals at these institutions are rewarded based on short term profits. Rational employees may have less career risk when they "bet with the consensus" than when they buck a trend: this may increase herding effects and makes bubbles worse. Note: Nate pointedly does not claim that one can make money on Intrade by betting based on FiveThirtyEight probabilities. But he stresses that Intrade prices are themselves probably heavily informed by poll-based models like the ones on FiveThirtyEight.

12. Climate prediction: prima facie case for anthropic warming is very strong (greenhouse gas up, temperature up, good theoretical reason for former causing latter). But lots of good reason to doubt accuracy of specific elaborate computer models, and most scientists admit uncertainty about details.

13. We failed to predict both Pearl Harbor and September 11. Unknown unknowns got us. Got to watch out for loose Pakistani nukes and other potential catastrophic surprises in the future.

I liked this book, but, then again, I am a geek.
By RonnieT
Nate Silver is best known for using polling data to call political elections. He missed on the Trump win, but was pretty good up until then.

The Signal and the Noise is a well written, well researched and well reasoned book about forecasting and the various mistakes that prognosticators make. He addresses failures as the inability of economists and others to foresee the bursting of the housing bubble and the chaos it created in 2008. Other themes include easier-to-predict subjects such as future performance of major league baseball players and the success (or not) of poker players. In these later two, he has real world experience as he developed software to predict baseball player performance and made a living as a professional poker player.

Other forecasting areas that he writes about include weather (a modern success); earthquakes (not so much due to difficulties in differentiating the signal from the noise); the spread of infectious diseases (difficult to model due to human behaviour); and climate change (right on warming but uncertain about effects).

One of the over all themes involves the Bayes Theorem. This requires an a priori hunch about the chances of an event that is refined by future observations and experimenting.

There were sections I like more than others, but this may correlate more with my affinity for the subjects rather than Silver's reporting. I particularly like the section on Climate Change research. It was thoughtful and open-minded. As he does throughout the book, he looks at the facts and the stats and interviews the people involved in the research.

The New Standard in EM Procedures
By Infomaniac
This book is extremely detailed and has great illustrations. I compared this book for many hours to Roberts & Hedges (R&H) 4th ed and this book blows it away. The entire procedure is fully explained (as in both books), but this book shows you numerous different locations and ways of getting the same procedure done. This seems to lack in R&H. Also, the illustrations are great. R&H uses mainly black and white photos from the 1970's/80's where the person was not even using gloves and there is a footnote in every picture to use gloves. I think R&H needs to use new updated pictures if they want to even compete with this book. The increased use of color, great illustrations with key landmarks, numerous charts, and ease of explanation make this book essential in any emergency physician's library.
