It covers a wide range of topics, including linear and non-linear regression models, classification and regression tree structures, and generalized linear models. I particularly enjoyed the third section of the book covering interesting areas of advanced statistical modeling, where the reader can find many didactical examples that are highly relevant to environmental management such as the problem of Cryptosporidium in drinking water, the uncertainty in water quality measurements using the ELISA method as an example, or the threshold indicator taxa analysis.
The author has the unique ability of being able to clearly explain difficult statistical concepts whilst still making the book accessible for researchers of all levels, from undergraduate students to researchers already conducting serious empirical research. The emerging philosophical consensus that both the frequentist and Bayesian way of thinking are important in statistical practice is nicely articulated throughout the book. Neil Gunther, M.Sc., Ph.D. is a leading industry computer performance consultant who founded Performance Dynamics Company (www.perfdynamics.com) in 1994. Prior to that, Dr. Gunther held research and management positions at San Jose State University, JPL/NASA (Voyager and Galileo spacecraft), Xerox PARC research center and Pyramid/Siemens Technology. His performance and capacity planning classes have been presented at such organizations as Boeing, Fedex, Motorola, Stanford University, and Sun Microsystems.

Dr. Gunther is the author of over a hundred papers on computer performance topics, including "HIT-AND-RUN TACTICS ENABLE GUERRILLA CAPACITY PLANNING," published recently in IEEE IT Professional magazine. He has also written the book THE PRACTICAL PERFORMANCE ANALYST (iUniverse.com 2000). In 1996 he was awarded Best Technical Paper at CMG, and in 1997 was nominated for the A.A. Michelson Award. Dr. Gunther is a member of the AMS, ACM, CMG, IEEE, SAGE-AU, SIGMETRICS and USENIX.

concise and lucid exposition on performance analysis

dr. gunther has written a gem of a performance analysis book. for starter, the unix load average is a wonderful detective story. i especially liked chapter 5 with real performance analysis experiences applying queueing theory discussed in both chapter 2 and 3. the best part is dr. gunther's exposition of queueing theory into the essence for the working performance analysts. in addition, appendix B on buffers and appendix C on memoryless property are the most lucid explanation i have read. i would also heartily recommend dr. gunther's other book, the practical performance analyst.

A great tool for the capacity planner or performance analyst

This book lays out basics of queuing theory in a way that is both understandable and easy to apply. I have fumbled for years using complex performance analysis tools without ever really knowing whether or not I'm getting the right answer. Now I know what looks right and what doesn't. Gunther has an easy to follow style as he introduces the concepts of queuing theory. Then he shows you how to apply what you have learned using real life examples. It's a definite "must have" for the capacity planner or system performance analyst.

Both theory and practice plus free modeling software

The coverage of the theory in the first part of the book is very well done. However, its the practical examples in the second half where the book really shines. There are a number of examples modeling client server and web applications.

A copy of his modeling tool, PDQ, is available by download from his website. This version is in Perl. Even though I am not a very experienced Perl programmer I think this is an interesting way to get more practice by building PDQ models. The PDQ package is explained very well and a number of example models are covered.

Some of the examples are from various scattered publications. It's great to get these example models collected in one volume. Dr. Gunthers characteristic sense of humor comes through in the examples.

There is some very practical information about model validation and what to do to account for hidden latencies. There are clear examples of how to practice the art of applying queuing models to real problems.

I would have liked to see some more examples of load dependent servers. Overall I rate the book five stars and I really appreciate getting the modeling software for free!

I love this book. It is very useful in that prior to each primary document, the reader is given a brief background. In some cases the book also gives short interpretations. It is very useful and goes along great with Rosenwein's other book entitled A Short History Of The Middle Ages.

I read this before giving it to my 12 year old daughter to read. I was surprised by how much I liked it. I kept wondering if I would have made the mistakes I did in love and dating if I'd known these things as a teenaged girl. The books format is great, ending each chapter with questions to think about, and making it easy to have a dialogue with your girl on different topics. I will say that Part 2 of the book dives more deeply into the physical realms of relationships, so make sure she's ready to read it alone or go through it with her, which is what I'm doing.

Should be Required Reading

First I must say that I won this book from the Goodreads First reads program. I am not required to write this review but I am nevertheless.
I believe this book is a must read for every teenage girl, especially those with Christian foundations. This gives much wonderful advice and information backed up with Bible passages for reinforcement of God's hope for all single women but is much directed toward the teenager who has yet become involved in a male/female relationship. I feel the author truly laid it out there with much truth and honesty and offers great information, possibly saving the young girls from making some regrettable mistakes. And for those girls who have already made those mistakes, Ms Minassian informs them that God is offering His forgiveness and allow them to start over. She also offers support for those girls who have or are suffering from being "Crushed".
I highly recommend this book for teenage girls and young single female adults. I would love to see it used in church youth groups as Ms. Minassian post questions at the end of each chapter.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL GIRLS

This book has really changed my perspective on how i look at my relationships with guys ..im 19 and i have never been in a relationship..but that doesnt mean i havnt had my fair share of heartbreak from rejection, not having proper boundaries..and looking to guys to tell me who i am rather than looking to god..... this book really challenged me to dig deeper and take out the roots of the things that hurt me... I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL GIRLS!! im starting it for the second time again tonight :) ...Jessie is the real deal..and she is honest .. i feel like im talking to a good friend who i trust while reading..I LOVE IT!
