Spotlights & Shadows - The Albert Salmi Story, by Sandra Grabman

You know the face. You know the credit list: Lost in Space, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Kung Fu, The Twilight Zone and hundreds more... But who was Albert Salmi?

Born of Finnish parents in the Finnish section of Brooklyn, Albert Salmi had a childhood he would recall fondly, even though it was plagued by the hardships of the Great Depression. In an attempt to earn money as a teenager, he broke the law; and the very wise judge gave him a sentence that turned his life around. Salmi set his sights for an acting career and, thanks to the GI Bill, got the best training possible. The result was that for forty years he appeared on the Broadway stage (Bus Stop, etc.), national television (Alfred Hitchcock Presents, I Spy, That Girl, Dallas, etc., etc.), and in countless films (The Unforgiven, Caddyshack, etc.).

Sandra Grabman's biography is a frank and loving tribute, combined with many memories from Salmi's family, friends, and co-stars, and includes never-before-published memoirs from the man himself. From humble beginnings -- to a highly successful acting career -- to a tragic death that shocked the world -- Albert Salmi's story is unlike any other you'll ever read.

Review
Grabman obviously has a strong attachment to her subject, but only occasionally slips into dripping prose about how wonderful he is. Believe me, I've read enough authors who are totally mad about their subjects, and it tends to get out of hand, but Grabman never lets it - the few instances of gushing come across as sweet, adding nicely to the tone of the book. She gets her points across, has excellent research, and loves her subject - not a bad combination at all. The book's one fault lies in her not going more deeply into his movie work; a healthy analysis would have been a welcome part of this study. As it is, however, Albert's personal side is so involving, that the book is still fascinating. Another great thing about the book is Albert's own words, which is a real insider's look at Broadway, early TV, and post-fifties films. He speaks about his emergence as an actor, his feelings toward the artistic world around him, and the people he worked with. His sense of humor is also evident. It is terrific that his memoirs were saved by a person who obviously cherishes his legacy. The sensitivity and insightfulness found in Sandra Grabman's text are a fine tribute to a fine actor. Terrific photos, many unpublished. --Classic Images/Laura Wagner

I got a big kick out of this fascinating (and often grim) biography of character actor extraordinaire Albert Salmi. He was beloved by fellow actors, appeared in well over 100 movies and TV shows and, in 1990, killed himself and his ex-wife in a murder-suicide fueled by depression and a gutted bank account. It's a tragic story, no doubt, but the book focuses more on his fascinating early years - his childhood in a Finnish section of Brooklyn, the Actors' Studio, a Broadway lead role in Bus Stop, TV and movie fame, and the occasional career misstep. Grabman doesn't offer much info on individual film projects, skipping over many big titles in order to focus more on the man and his often-tumultuous family life, while the book's hightlights are the lengthy passages from Salmi's unfinished memoirs, which gives us important insight into his youth and mindset. Along the way, there are recollections from colleagues like R.G. Armstrong and Bill Shatner, who all speak of Salmi's good-natured personality, plus a foreword by longtime friend and Petrocelli co-star Barry Newman. It's a terrific tribute to a talented and ingratiating actor. --Shock Cinema

About the Author
Sandra Grabman is a Virginia native who was transplanted in 1980 to Oklahoma. It didn’t take living in the Wild West to make her appreciate the work of actor Albert Salmi, however. He has fascinated her for decades. When she learned of his tragic death and wanted more details about his life, she found that there had never been a book written about him and the pieces of information that were available in print and over the internet contradicted each other. She felt it was about time that situation was corrected, so she set out to find the truth and to write an accurate biography of Salmi. It would be her gift to the family, friends, and fans he left behind.

Spotlights & Shadows: The Albert Salmi Story is her second book-length work. The first is entitled Autism in the Family, a chronicle of her grown son’s first eighteen years and his successful integration into the real world. She's also the biographer of Peggy Ann Garner, star of the classic 1945 film A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

The quintessential biography of Albert Salmi.
By Klaus D. Haisch
Albert Salmi (1928-1990) appeared in about 60 movies, and had over 100 TV guest appearances. Albert was a truly great professional -- the consummate actor. Albert would appear on Broadway in some famous plays, such as "Bus Stop" and "End as a Man."

When Albert decided to make the transition from stage to screen, Albert was offered an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor for his first movie, "The Brothers Karamazov" (1958), for which the studio wanted to nominate him for an Oscar. He told them no. Why? Read the book to find out. Albert would go on to appear in many movies, and TV shows, in the following decades.

His first marriage, to Peggy Ann Garner, ended in divorce; they had a daughter named Catherine Ann Salmi, or Cas for short. Alb's 2nd marriage, to Roberta Pollock, was rocky; they had 2 daughters, Lizanne and Jenny, but Albert discovered later that Roberta had been severely abusing Cas and one of her own daughters. Nevertheless, the book tells us that she did many things right, too -- helped him achieve peace and quiet so he could learn his lines, brought the children to visit him when he was working on location, filled in for him at a White House reception, arranged a teaching job for him during his semi-retirement, etc.

Later in his life, in his fifties, Albert felt that he had been abandoned by Hollywood. Albert used his vast knowledge of acting to teach young students. Sandra Grabman interviewed dozens of his co-stars, friends, neighbors, and family members for this book. Best of all are excerpts, throughout the book, of Albert's own handwritten memoirs telling us about the happenings of his life. Sandra Grabman's book is the quintessential biography of Albert Salmi.

A Bittersweet Life
By Cathy Earnshaw
If you want to read a well-written. well-researched, and interesting biography about one of the most talented and versatile actors of the 20th Century, then this book is for you.
Right from the start, a particularly appealing aspect of the format is the interweaving of Ms.Grabman's narrative with Mr. Salmi's autobiographical notes (discovered after his untimely death), thus allowing the reader to hear the subject speak in his own voice while his biographer provides relevant comments and background for his recollections. This alternation of author's text with subject's memoirs is beautifully executed, and even after his notes run out, Ms. Grabman has gathered enough material on her own to continue the story of Mr. Salmi's life journey, including interviews containing revealing and insightful reminiscences by many who traveled the road with him for a while along the way, both personally and professionally.
What emerges is a picture of a complex but deceptively simple man, dedicated to the quest for, and often achieving, excellence in his craft, whose personal life was largely devoted to enjoying family and friends while shunning the ostentatious trappings of fame. He comes across as an extremely likeable human being, warm, gentle and generous in both his professional and personal relationships. That is why, in sharp contrast to this characterization, Mr. Salmi's sudden and violent death becomes all the more incongruous and hard to comprehend, but if you're looking for lurid details and wild speculations, you won't find them in these pages. Instead, Ms.Grabman has chosen to treat the circumstances surrounding the tragic event with sensitivity and restraint, while at the same time by no means diminishing the facts of the matter nor the search for meaning behind Mr. Salmi's desperate final act.
It goes without saying that this book is a must-read for Albert Salmi fans, some of whom might be as surprised as I was to learn of his Brooklyn upbringing and early years of study with Lee Strasberg at the legendary Actors Studio. I also highly recommend it to readers in general, to biography buffs in particular, and to drama students specifically as there is quite a bit of interesting film and theater history to be found here. You also won't want to miss the selection of great photos.
Buy this book! You won't regret it.

An Engaging Biography
By Charles Tranberg
Sandra Grabman is a wonderful writer of biography. Her first book, Spotlights and Shadows: The Albert Salmi Story is an excellent read. She is a economical writer who can get alot of information across without the reader straining their eyes.

Her subject was one of the best television, stage, and film character actors of the many who cropped up during the 1950's. His story is compellingly told with the help of Albert Salmi's unpublished memoirs. One of the great treats of this book is that Sandra had access to many of Albert's writings and to members of his family. We get the flesh and blood human being, exposed warts and all in this fine book. We get a step by step build-up as to why a man who was as loved as Albert--and most of his collegues and friends loved him dearly--took the tragic turn he ultimately did. It is a compelling book--and another fine product from the publishing house of bear manor media.

I can't wait to read Ms. Grabman's new book on the wonderful Peggy Ann Garner.
