Indus Script Cipher

This is a path-breaking work as significant as the decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs by Champollion.
For nearly130 years, the Indus script has remained a challenging enigma to scholars of languages, writing systems and civilization studies. The script was invented and used over an extensive area of what is called the Indus or Sindhu-Sarasvati civilization. Over 2000 or 80% of archaeological sites are found on the Sarasvati River basin, a river adored in a very old human document called the Rigveda and which dried up due to tectonic and resulting river migration causes. In 1822, history was made when Egyptian hieroglyphs were deciphered by Jean-François Champollion from parts of the Rosetta Stone. Champollion showed that the Egyptian writing system, c.3000 BCE was a combination of phonetic and ideographic glyphs. The Rosetta Stone is dated 196 BCE and had a decree in three versions: one in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, one in the Egyptian demotic script, and one in ancient Greek. Since alphabets of ancient Greek were known, Champollion used the trilingual inscription to validate his historic decipherment.
Indus Script Cipher makes history recording hundreds of hieroglyphs of India. Absence of a Rosetta Stone which has been the principal impediment in validating any decryption of Indus script cipher is thus overcome. Further validation comes from evidences of the historical periods in India from c. 600 BCE showing continued use of Indus script hieroglyphs which evolved from c. 3300 BCE. This book details a decipherment of the Indus script using the same rebus method used by Champollion to read ancient phonetic hieroglyphs of India. By demonstrating an Indian linguistic area of cultural and language contacts and history of language changes, this is a landmark contribution to civilization studies of the world and will promote efforts to rewrite the ancient socio-cultural and economic history of a billion people in India and neighboring regions. This work will also be of interest to IT and Information Theory specialists.
Comment by a world-renowned expert in Cryptography:
What a delight truly it is to read the prodigious effort of Indus Script Cipher! In the case of Egyptian hieroglyphs, there was a Rosetta Stone, which enabled a (partially) Known ”“ Plaintext attack to succeed. The task is considerably harder here in a Cyphertext-only attack without a Rosetta Stone. The concept of Unicity Distance (the information-theoretic innovation of Claude Shannon) is the minimum length of ciphertext required to break a code theoretically, never mind its actual complexity. The code-breaking is not just deciphering a code, but it is finding the secret-key, which simplifies the old and new tasks as well.
Kalyanaraman studied thousands of seals containing a number of glyphs and each glyph having two or more glyptic elements, sufficiently large enough ciphertext symbols or characters. Compiling a database of over 8000 semantic clusters of glosses from Indian multi-lingual lexicon and cryptanalysis of these is indeed history-making, par excellence.

A novel approach
By Mayuresh Kelkar
A Review of Indus Script Cipher
Mayuresh Kelkar
Srinivasan Kalyanaraman has tackled a problem that has remained intractable to
the brightest and the most dedicated scholars all over the world for nearly a
century. He uses the rebus method to decode the so called "Indus" script. The
author assumes that the script is a cryptographic system that uses pictures or
glyphs to convey text messages. These messages could only be understood by
those who knew the code, hence maintaining its secrecy and preventing its
misuse. The language(s) of the texts is assumed to be a combination of
dialects that were spoken over the South Asian linguistic area at the time.
These dialects belong to the Munda, Dravidian, Tibeto Burmese and the Indo-Aryan
families. Some isolated languages and now extinct languages are also included.
The combination and interaction of these languages resulted in a language which
Kalyanaraman labels as "mlechha" or mixture. The mleccha language was the
lingua franca of South Asia at the time of the development of the "Indus"
script. The underlying principle of the rebus method is explained by the author
as follows. A word is represented by the picture of an object or an animal that
has a similar sound in the lingua franca. For example the English word "group"
can be represented by a picture of a club which also means a group. The
Sanskrit word "ayas" or metal is represented by the picture of a fish or "ayo"
in Santali. The script was used by artisans and metal workers to engage in
trade of the various objects they produced. The book could have benefited from
clearly defined chapters and a table of contents.

Indus Script Decoded and Validated
By O.K.Henry
Indus Script Cipher-Hieroglyphs of Indian Linguistic Area. Dr. Kalyanaraman, with his Herculean task of seven volume encyclopedia of rediscovery of Sarasvati (ancient river bank Hindu civilization in 15 volumes), Indian Alchemy-soma in the Veda and Indian Lexicon - a multilingual dictionary of over 25 Indian languages, now ventured into a complex undertaking of studying thousands of seals containing a number of glyphs. Each glyph had two or more glyphic elements, sufficiently large enough to ciphertext symbols or characters resulting in development of a database of over 8000semantic clusters of glosses from Indian multi-lingual lexicon and cryptanalysis resulting in establishing that the people of ancient Indus Valley who used Indus script hieroglyphs that evolved from c.3300 BCE. Creaking the Egyptian writing system, c.3000 BCE was much easier to decode as it was a combination of phonetic and ideographic glyphs and the Rosetta stone had the same message in three scripts including the known script of Greek. For Indus glyphics, a Rosetta stone had to be created and the Indus Rosetta has 300,000 words of the Indian lexicon which had to be matched with about 1000 glyphic elements of Indus writing making this book a valuable resource for students of Indology. Only negative aspect is the right margin in some pages is blurred. This book makes history by recording existence of script in ancient India that appears to be older than that of ancient Egypt.
