About the Author
Zvi Bodie is Professor of Finance and Economics at the Boston University School of Management. He is the director of Boston University’s Chartered Financial Analysts Examination Review Program and has served as consultant to many private and governmental organizations. Professor Bodie is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, where he was director of the NBER Project on Financial Aspects of the U.S. Pension System, and he is a member of the Pension Research Council of The Wharton School. He is widely published in leading professional journals, and his previous books include Pensions in the U.S. Economy, Issues in Pension Economics, and Financial Aspects of the U.S. Pension System.

Alex Kane is professor of finance and economics at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He was visiting professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo; Graduate School of Business, Harvard; Kennedy School of Government, Harvard; and research associate, National Bureau of Economic Research. An author of many articles in finance and management journals, Professor Kane’s research is mainly in corporate finance, portfolio management, and capital markets, most recently in the measurement of market volatility and the pricing of options. Professor Kane is the developer of the International Simulation Laboratory (ISL) for training and experimental research in executive decision making.

Alan Marcus is professor of finance in the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College. He received his PHD in Economics from MIT in 1981. Professor Marcus recently has been a visiting professor at the Athens Laboratory of Business Administration and at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and has served as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He also established the Chartered Financial Analysts Review Program at Boston College. Professor Marcus has published widely in the fields of capital markets and portfolio management, with an emphasis on applications of futures and options pricing models. His consulting work has ranged from new product development to provision of expert testimony in utility rate proceedings. He also spend two years at the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac), where he developed models of mortgage pricing and credit risk, and he currently serves on the Advisory Council for the Currency Risk Management Alliance of State Street Bank and Windham Capital Management Boston.

A read for everyone

Emilie Carles started out her life the same as many of her neighbors in her predominantly peasant town in France. Unlike her neighbors, she went on to receive an education and break out of generations of grinding poverty and ingnorance. The very fact that she is able to chronicle her most unusual life is a testament to the power of the human spirit. Everyone interested in issues of class and gender influencing biography should read this excellent memoir.

Interesting portrait of one 20th-century life

This was a quick read (I finished it during a plane ride across the Pacific). Carles was born in 1900 in a peasant hamlet in one of the poorest regions of Alpine France. Rare for her time and place, she gained literacy and was successful enough in her studies to gain a teacher's license. She wrote her stories into notebooks for decades and, when the time came, began fashioning their contents into an autobiography. As sickness overtook her, she opted to tell her tale to a publisher, who worked the tapes and her books into this story.

It's worth reading. I've read bits and pieces of the history of isolated, medieval Alpine communities, mostly in books on mountain-climbing; this is a glimpse into the end days of such a community, with its harsh lifestyle, old traditions, and superstitions of its inhabitants. Carles was a woman who challenged many of those traditions and superstitions as she grew and learned.

Toward its end the book bogs down into political statements. Carles married a remarkably free-thinking man for the late 1920s/early 1930s, and his views meshed nicely with hers--pacifism honed by the loss of her brothers to the trenches of World War I and a socialist bent that wants to see the state offer real aid to poor communities like hers. I could have done without her (unrealistic in my opinion) stirring proclamations on the need for a four-hour work day and a return to a simple rural lifestyle. But this doesn't take away from the value of the book on the whole. It's an entertaining look at a strong woman who saw the twentieth century pass in a place that rarely gets written about.

A Trip Into the Past

This is one of the best autobiographies I have ever read. Mme. Carles has so much to say about her way of life and her countrymen. Her relationship with her family is described touchingly and well. Her peasant background reminds me of my grandparents' farming lives in the southern U.S. As I read, it seemed strange to me that someone who depended on owning and working land could become a leftist. However, in view of Mrs. Carles' descriptions of the various governments which have ruled France, I can see how someone could be desperate (and naive) enough to turn to anti-capitalism. It helped me understand the political climate in Europe better, but that is not why I recommend the book. It is simply a lovely description of how peasants lived and thought for many centuries. It has a sense of timelessness, of life before the frantic changes technology has brought over the last hundred years. Just take a large grain of salt when you read Carles' economic recommendations.

D.L. Jackson proves there’s no age limit on attraction in Beauty and the Brigadier. As part of the 1Night Stand series, Madame Eve’s exclusive dating service creates a match between Brigadier General Eli Wells and supermodel Anya Volkov. They agree to a “predate” at the military base. Eli plans to give Anya a taste of his world to see if she’s got the right stuff.

Although it is snack-size in length, the storyline is engaging, particularly since it features an older couple. The potential exists for more development, but in keeping with the series theme, it isn’t meant to be a full-blown novel. Readers should be aware that there is not a lot of depth to the story, making it a quick read.

The characters generate plenty of heat, providing a spicy framework as the two put Madame Eve’s matchmaking skills to the test. I would classify this as being on the lighter end of the erotic genre.

Quick and light, Beauty and the Brigadier is a breath of fresh air. I enjoyed the fact that the main characters in the story weren’t young – but rather middle-aged. It was nice to read about two mature people who are brought together without all of the dramatics or need to rehash their old wounds. The story is more about finding someone to share time with than the million and one ways to bone.

The characters are well written, particularly our two lovers in the story, Eli and Anya. They are pretty well developed considering the length of the story, and it was fun to read about how life brought them together. I also like the clever twist on the plot – a Beauty and the Beast-esque storyline that worked well here.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a welcome relief from the usual run-of-the-mill romance novel.

Cute short story ! Eli, is a General and grouchy since his wife died. Anya has just been told she's too old to model anymore. She needs a refreshing boost in her life. He needs a date for the Ball. They get together for a "pre-date", and sparks fly. She is also ex military and quite an athlete. Eli and Anya are perfect for one another. Deep thought filled characters, cute romance and hot sexiness make this a great story. ENJOY !!!

About the Author
J. M. Richards currently lives in the Pacific Northwest, though she’s been known to call nine different states home over the years, and consequently can no longer remember her own zip code. Once upon a time, she spent seven years living happily in Pittsburgh and still has a soft spot for the black and gold city of steel. She also graduated from College of the Ozarks in Missouri with a degree in Philosophy and Religion, which seemed like a good idea at the time. By day she is a (sometimes) mild-mannered site director of a before and after school program at an elementary school; she specializes in reading aloud, giving the stink eye, and teaching her kiddos about all things geeky (including superhe-roes, of course!). When she’s off duty, however, she resumes her secret identity as J. M. Richards; her superpowers include writing, reading, taking pictures of books, sipping tea, watching stuff, and faking a British accent. She has also published another novel, Found Phoebe, which she plans to release a second edition of in the near future, along with two sequels to Davin and Anna’s adventures, and plans for a trilogy about a female superhero (related to Davin) are in the works.

Enjoyable read

Tall, Dark Streak of Lightning was an enjoyable book to read casually this summer. While the book seems more geared towards the YA (young adult) crowd, the intelligent style and interesting plot work for slightly older audiences, too. It's the first book in a trilogy. The other two books aren't out yet, but I hope they will be soon! I'm already wanting to read more about Anna (the geeky college student longing for friendship) and Davin (the college outcast with an interesting secret).

I won't write a synopsis of the book's plot, but will say that while it was a bit predictable in places, it had enough suspense to keep me turning the pages. The main character was definitely well thought-out, and seemed like a real person to me. The motivation for the secondary characters wasn't always as obvious, but it didn't need to be (and I suspect those characters will be fleshed out more in the remaining two volumes of the series).

The book should appeal to anybody who considers themselves at least a little bit geeky (whether you're a comic book geek like the main character or have other interests). There's romance (but nothing slutty), suspense (but nothing terrifying), and faith elements (but nothing preachy). Overall, it's an interesting book that left me looking for more from this talented young author.

Excellent presentation of fashion merchandising processes

It is now several years that I work in the commercial side of the fashion industry (trading). This book offers a scenic panorama of the fashion business processes from A to Z. useful framework about collective violence

Tilly is probably best known for his theories about state violence, but here he turns to collective or non-state violence. He categorizes collective violence along a spectrum or coordination amongst members and political salience of any damage that occurs. The book is also a tour de force of various types of collective violence (at least circa 2001 in the last edition). Definitely recommended for students of collective violence.

A Must for any Student of Collective Violence

One reason for political scientists to be wary of the analyses offered by their discipline is that sociologists have always been better at providing contemporary political analysis. Charles Tilly goes even further when he comes as a historical sociologist. In The Politics of Collective Violence, he provides, in a readable fashion, an analysis of collective violence through time and space.

By forcefully advancing the notion that collective violence is best explained when considered as a form of "contentious politics", Tilly dismisses the good versus evil dichotomy that seeks to understand any type of violence including collective violence as steaming from evil. By demonstrating the shortcomings of the type of collective violence analysis available so far ("ideal", "behavioral", and "relational"), he highlights relational analysis to tells us that it does not matter what people believe or what their genetic predispositions to violence are for collective violence. This is important because now we recognize individual responsibility without being able to raise anybody's moral superiority (p. 8).

The categories of collective violence provided in The Politics of Collective Violence (Violent rituals; coordinated destruction; opportunism; brawls; individual aggression--indeed; individual aggression is considered part of collective violence; scattered attacks; and broken negotiations) seem to include all types of collective violence known so far. Showing the functions of different actors, namely, the "political entrepreneurs" who differentiate between who is "us" and who is "them", the "violent specialists" who have tools necessary for carrying out damage (corporal, etc.), and, perhaps implicitly, the ordinary people who get co-opted, Tilly demonstrates how complex the task of identifying who is responsible is. This is complemented when he depicts how different types of state governments lead to different types of outcomes in collective violence.

Do not expect Tilly to be precise when it comes to facts (as for example when he calls the current president of Rwanda Paul Mugabe (the real name is Paul Kagame, or when he calls Hutus who opposed Habyarimana regime "dissidents" as if the regime was totalitarian like North Korea for instance and not authoritarian); however, whether or not he misses a fact or two does not affect the overall argument of the book--collective violence must be understood as a form of politics--is not affected. That is the power of history-based theory in explanation. Theory-based arguments are useful especially when one is dealing with policy recommendations such as policy recommendations for reducing collective violence as is the case in this book.

Tilly's book is a must for any student of collective violence. Different people will judge Tilly on, for instance, the type of boundaries that he stresses and other he does not, but, from now on, anyone studying collective violence from anywhere, anytime, will have to struggle with the arguments in The Politics of Collective Violence.

Excellent

I purchased the "boxed" set for my Kindle as I LOVE THE HARDBACKS SO MUCH. NOW I CAN EASILY TAKE THEM WITH ME WHEN I TRAVEL. Mr. Brennert is a skillful writer who crosses history with storytelling. I went and searched out several people and places that were referenced in these works. I have become quite the fan/groupie of this author. Love his work!!

I enjoyed Moloka'i tremendously but loved Honolulu. I highly recommend this book. In my opinion Alan Brennert is a master story teller.
