The Indian presence in the Great Wars

As an ex-seafarer born to an ex-Armyman, I have grown up to tales of how soldiers from India fought the battles between other people all over the world and then once at sea, seen memorials to war all over the world. Very rarely, if at all, have I seen or heard of any recognition of the role of people from the Indian sub-Continent in these Wars.
It was only after the advent of the Internet that these realities and truths can be seen emerging - soldiers from India who died all over the world, seafarers in lists of casualties for ships of navies belonging to countries often far away from where they went down, and even young airmen. Then there are the deep dark secrets emerging from the Pacific Islands, of Indian soldiers used as sustenance, cannibalised as a source of protein by armies who promised them freedom.
Raghu Karnad's essay on his personal search takes him into North East India, a now land-locked part of India dealt a cruel blow by the pen of those who re-drew India's borders. Because of the simple fact that modern day Burma/Myanmar and East Pakistan/Bangladesh block off all access to the sea, the North East remains a mystery to many in India, more's the pity. What would have been a short and easy bus or train or river or steamer journey is now days by train and road over difficult terrain.
All this, and more, as Raghu Karnad goes searching for family in the forests.
Worth the read, though I think this could become a major novel if somebody had the patience.
In my case, this is also the part of the world where my father served and took a few bullets, and where I now have family.
