At 13:55 hours that day rolling Syrian cannon thunder was heard all along the front on the Golan Heights, and dense, black smoke shrouded it completely.

Many accounts of the Yom Kippur War have been written. But this is the first behind-the-scenes look at the Northern Command preparations for war during that fateful summer, when the Syrian army in the north, together with the Egyptian army in the south, coordinated a blitzkrieg offensive against Israel.
This book offers fresh insight into the pre-war debate that raged between the Northern Command and the Intelligence Branch that believed Syria was not looking for war. For the first time, the reader will be privy to the decision-making details that threatened to overpower the IDF Command. The Generals, who were in command, describe in their own words the pivotal battles that changed the course of the war, as well as the disastrous effects of the “hindsight evaluation” after the war was won reverberated throughout the corridors of power.
The four contributors of this book were assisted by a team of researchers and other army commanders, under the direction and coordination of Military Historian, Brig. Gen. (Res.) Dr Dani Asher.

A bit too technical

The book is very detailed and provides a lot of information; however, it does get confusing and a bit too technical at times. Looks like the authors, all from the military, intended the book for their colleagues rather than the general public. I missed the maps, particularly that of Mt. Hermon. Also, the Kindle edition has typos and cut-off sentences.

The most comprehensive account of the Golan Heights front during the Yom Kippur War. This book surpasses and corrects information from Duel for the Golan, which until now stood as the standard account for the fight on the Golan. The author was a former Israeli Military Intelligence officer and has written a number of books on the Yom Kippur War in Hebrew. This book was translated to English and the translation was very well done. The writing is dry and very "military" style, but the information in the book is basically new and revealing.

I cheated and read the entire book in two days ...

I cheated and read the entire book in two days, but I am going back and read it the way it should (I assume): One page a day. I am not a person that usually enjoys motivational quotes, but each page has an Act, a Quote and a Reflection. And this Reflection comes from someone who is not only a scholar but a deeply blessed person with sensitivities that speaks to millions and whose perspectives about those Acts and/or Quotes are quite refreshing, positive and transformational. I am personally going to steal the idea that someone else already gave on a video, I'm using this book personally and giving it as a gift to my daughters so that they can use each page as a Diary too! Extraordinary read!

Cannot find the words to adequately express how amazing this book is! It's really great for any type of reader and is appropriate for any age, religion, etc. Orly Wahba is a true model of kindness!! Her nonprofit, Life Vest Inside, has been doing amazing things for the last few years so I had a pretty good idea of what I was going to get with this book but even I was pleasantly surprised. This book would make a great gift or personal buy. You won't be disappointed!!

About the Author
Stephen L. Herman is a retired electrician and teacher with more than 30 years of experience to his credit. A seasoned author, his reader-friendly textbooks on electricity and mathematics are popular with students and instructors alike. For two decades Mr. Herman was lead instructor for the Electrical Technology Curriculum at Lee College in Baytown, Texas, where he received an Excellence in Education Award from the Halliburton Education Foundation. He also taught at Randolph Community College in Asheboro, N.C., for nine years and helped establish an electrical curriculum for Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant, Texas. Good textbook for study or review

Herman provides us with a pretty thorough picture of electrical theories and practice. A thick, heavy tome, I have found it very useful in my studies. One of the better electrical textbooks available in English.

A Frenetic Blinding Bending Look into Gaelic Football, Subbing and Sobriety

Don't read this book at 3 am! It will buzz you up to the ceiling and keep you up there - you will NOT get back to sleep! John's story is frenetic, well-written and above all, honest. He is self-deprecating but also knows how good he was as the sub Goal Keeper. I can't imagine what it must have felt like to have been a sub all that time and never to have gotten a game on! (and this for a man who admits to loving the limelight!)
His personality shines through so that this book is not only an inside-the-locker room expose of the Dub's rituals and warm-ups and practices - it's also a mad careening journey into the mind of a man crazied by a pedophile priest in his boyhood and who's been chasing demons since then. The man's heart shines through in this book on football and I'm a person who HATES football of any description, having married a bloke who watched it every night for the 8 years of our "bliss" together.
John managed to keep me rivetted throughout although I got lost on some of the footy jargon. So don't let the apparent content put you off. It really is a read about a guy who went from god-awful benders of self-oblivion to the sober paddy he is today. That journey is not unusual - what's unusual is that a man could be so honest about it. More men should be so honest.
It's a great read - it'll get your pulse racing (if you're a football fan) and it will creep rapidly around your heart like vines so that you praise the gods when he finally meets his wife Serena and sobers up. I can't convey the relief I felt when that happened. A really interesting read.

good book

I was happy to find this book in amazon.com as I used this for my practical chemistry course in India. Majority of the experiments are quite interesting if you have some liking for chemistry practicals. Some take about 3 hours or more. The best experiments are on the extraction of DNA from peas and onions and the one on chemiluminiscence and there is one even on kidney stones and estimation of phosphoric acid from Coke and Pepsi. One requires a little chemistry background to understand the theory provided along with the experiments. Overall a good book.

This book from IIT Kanpur, India is quite interesting and has 20 experiments which are new and easy to do in a chemistry undergraduate laboratory. What I liked most is the informative introduction to each experiment.Cost of running the experiments also is very low. I must say that there are many experiments in inorganic and organic chemsitry and few in physical. But overall a real change from the conventional practical chemistry text books.

I've reviewed over a dozen books on cloud computing. This book is better than average but misses its objective of being a practical introduction. It has lots of interesting information and is indeed a useful companion for anyone seriously involved in cloud computing but there are other overviews which are more comprehensive and easier to digest.

Velte, Velte and Elsenpeter touch on many of the main topics, such as security, networking, storage. They mention a number of cloud service providers. The problem is that they do not tie these together in a logical and methodical way. Some of the other recent books do this better. I also ask myself the specific relevance of eclectic topics such as AJAX XHTML and AIR to cloud computing.

In spite of the minor deficiencies which I mention above this is a useful text that will help many readers who need to broaden their understanding of cloud computing and related technologies.

The Case for Cloud

Is your company considering migrating to the Cloud? What Cloud strategy is best for your organization? Are you having troubles identifying the major Cloud Vendors or even how to begin using their technology? Are you interested in knowing what the big deal is about the buzz surrounding Cloud? Are you trying to separate fact from fiction about the Cloud? Look no further than Cloud Computing: A Practical Approach, an good introduction to Cloud Computing. The authors of this book have provided a well-structured apologetic and business case for using Cloud Computing Technology; this book has a little bit for everyone: IT Administrators, Architects, Developers, Managers, Executives, etc. Even someone, with general knowledge of IT, such as mobile users, can benefit from this book. In fact, the authors state in the preface that the book is for "anyone who wants to learn about cloud computing" (xiv).

The books is organized in three sections: Getting Started, Cloud Computing Technology, and Cloud Computing at Work, the heart of the book .

The First Section, Getting Started, comprising 88 pages, introduces and explains various Cloud `basics', including the clearing up the confusion over the meaning of "Cloud". According to the authors,
"In essence, cloud is a construct that allows you to access applications that actually reside at a location other than your computer or other Internet-connected device; most often, this will be a distant datacenter...The beauty of cloud computing...is that another company hosts your application (or suite of applications, for that matter). This means that they handle the costs of servers, they manage the software updates, and--depending on how you craft your contract--you pay less for the service" (p. 4).
After providing a brief overview, topics as cloud components, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS),Software as a Service (SaaS), and Storage are all explained. The pros and cons of using Cloud Computing are stated in a fair manner, although the benefits of the Cloud are given edge. Nonetheless, the authors present a comprehensive list of concerns and issues, such as security and privacy, that all should be know before transitioning to the cloud. The authors warn that in some cases it is best not to use Cloud Computing. The major Cloud `Titans', such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, SalesForce, etc, are also highlighted along with some of their offerings. The `Business Case for the cloud' (p. 69-87) is presented in a very adequate manner.

Cloud Computing Technology (76 pages) highlights the Infrastructures of the cloud, such as the Hardware, the networking protocol, and the way Customers and Developers can access the Cloud.

Lastly, the main section, Cloud Computing At Work, almost twice as longer than any of previous sections(154 pages), expands upon topics introduced in Getting Started (and briefly mentioned in Cloud Computing Technology) such, SaaS, Software + Services, and the trade-offs between a `public'(external) Cloud and a Local (internal) Cloud, and a mixed solution of both . In addition, some of the common services that are used by the general population, such a Google mail, Google Docs, or MSN Hotmail are also explained. Some of the discussion on "Virtualization" seems misplaced and should have been included in section II, Cloud Computing Technology.

The book includes three appendices which are probably worth the price of the book by itself. It includes a short, but useful Glossary, and a most beneficial list of who's who of Cloud vendors (over 60), with their sites and brief descriptions of the offerings (p. 319-22). Furthermore, a table of World Wide Web resources on Cloud Computing is provided for further research (p. 324-25).

One of highlights of the book is that it contains many helpful diagrams, and various website snapshots of various Cloud Vendors and their offerings. The listing of vendors' price offerings, key features, services, and URLs are some of the strongest points of the book. It also presents lesser known, but intriguing and innovative companies, Cloud based applications and tools, such "Skytap Virtualization Lab" (p 281-84). Also, there are brief sections on how to start development on the Cloud (Google, SalesForce, and Azure); However as developer I was craving for more.

The Best practices for Migrating and Utilizing the Cloud (p. 297-309) are very thoughtful and sensible in my estimation, although by no means exhaustive. The authors note, "When you plan to move to a cloud solution, there ways to go bout making the change to ensure an optimal experience while paying less than a colossal price. It stars with your analysis and selection of a vendor, and continues with your day-to-day usage of that service" (p. 306). These three factors are in explored in some detail in the chapter. It seems like all the Cloud Computing topics are covered, even if briefly.

Some of the strengths of the book are also its weaknesses. By its very nature of trying to reach a wide audience, some parts will be appealing to some, while others will seem uninteresting. The authors typically introduce topics in an outline form and then discuss them in an orderly fashion. Initially, this allows the readers to get acquainted with terminology, technology, offerings, and benefits of Cloud Computing. However, after a while, some of information becomes repetitive. For example, I suppose for a newbie to this will be very a helpful pedagogue to constantly hammer-in the concepts repeatedly.

At times the book feels like a marketing ploy for the Cloud. Some may find the comments, embedded throughout the book, by Cloud Vendor to be illuminating, but I wanted to see less of it. However, this may say more about me, as a developer. Furthermore, the Authors intend the book to include a wider audience, such as Executives. In this, the authors succeed for the most part. Lastly, sometimes, it is not always clear how all some sections and/or technologies integrate with one another. Even though the book does succeed in including information for a very broad audience, some newbies may have trouble to understanding certain concepts or terminology, since the authors don't go in-depth in various instances.

Despite these minor quibbles, I find the book enlightening on the various vendors and their offerings. If you are new to the cloud or a looking reasons to move to the cloud, either in part or completely, this books makes many compelling reasons for it. At the same time, the book provides a fair assessment of the current problems of Cloud.

I highly recommend this book as a good introduction to Cloud Computing. However, if you don't' have $39.99 to dish out for the book (Amazon is currently selling at $26.39), check the free podcasts from PluralSight and you get essentially an abbreviated discussion on many of topics covered in the book.

A book that is only for Sales/Research Reps in an Organization

When I bought this book, I was hoping to see architectural suggestions, explanations of what pitfalls to expect, issues surrounding the cloud architecture, etc.

This was not it at all.

Instead, the book revolves around a repetitive concept of showing the exact same cloud providers over and over, makes suggestions for which service to buy, and then repeats in almost every chapter. I rated this a 1 star because I expected more based on the cover, and what the book "said" it was going to give me. From a developer's perspective - this is NOT the book to buy.

However, if I were in a position to research the available cloud providers and the pros/cons of each, then I may have voted this higher. As I stated already, these type of questions are hammered over and over into your brain about the differences between each of the providers they cover (Amazon, Google, etc.).

Really enjoyed this book

Really enjoyed this book. There were some great pearls of wisdom here. I highly recommend this book. One of my favorites, "Comparison is the thief of all joy." This was very relevant for me in my situation.

You can borrow my mentor for 105 pages!!

Joshua Medcalf has been a mentor of mine over the past 4 1/2 years. This book allows others insight into the journey I have been on with him. I would recommend "Chop Wood, Carry Water" to anyone looking to measure their life based on significance over success. We live in a very precarious time and influencing others in a way that makes them realize their principles will long outlive their feelings is far more important than dusting off trophies. Go hit "Purchase" now.

Love the Journey

Having previously read "Burn Your Goals," I was excited to finally read this book. While the concepts and lessons are similar to "Goals," the fictional story told in "Chop" personifies a young man's transformation without cumbersome story development. This made for a pretty quick and engaging read, with the lessons obviously stated, so the reader can quickly apply them without having to sift it from a hefty novella. I appreciated this direct, yet elegant and effective delivery. As for the content itself, it's priceless. Both books have me not only re-evaluating how I act and think, but making worthwhile changes and enjoying the positive results. The message is fairly simple, but because behaviors need modified it takes more than a quick meme to facilitate real change. I intend to re-read some chapters as needed to reinforce my transformation (stubborn, hard-wired mind!), and I look forward to other works by both Medcalf and Jamie Gilbert to continue this enlightening journey. Bravo!

This is the story of a pilot's adventures and education while flying for the Armed Forces of Saudi Arabia. A land of mystery and intrigue. There are no tourists in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. You must have a government sponsor with an entry visa to go there. An exit visa will be issued after your arrival at the discretion of the government. To go there is no guarantee that you will be allowed to leave. The author was held sixty-days beyond his will before he was allowed to leave. The mail is censored both coming and going. Mail from the USA is sometimes as late as six months. Photographs are forbidden without express permits from the government. Photos made by the author were made without a permit and were taken from suitcases passing through airport checkpoints. Hotels and fine dining rooms are primarily for men only. Separate and isolated sections are for families (men with their wives). There are no movie theaters or places of entertainment as known in the rest of world. No religion other that Islam is tolerated. The author explains his experience there with some tongue in cheek. To live in a place that has much wealth and is still trying to bring its nomadic people still dedicated to tribalism into the modern world is an education. In the most part the Saudis are a very friendly people, and they love Americans . . . in the most part.
